Certificate II in Sport (Officiating)

Develop your passion for sport into a profession, with a complete range of officiating skills. Discover the knowledge, practical application and experience to officiate in any chosen sport at a regional, state, national and/or professional level. With employment opportunities ranging from sports official, umpire or industry adviser at all levels of government, it’s the perfect course to advance your career.

This course has been developed under the Australian Quality Training Framework (AQTF) and is a nationally recognised course.

This qualification facilitates the development of the following knowledge and skills at the local/regional level:
  • supervising sporting events;
  • controlling the entry and participation of competitors in sporting events;
  • determining violations of rules and regulations and determining penalties for those breaches;
  • deciding on results and, recording and announcing of results;
  • administrating competitions; and
  • being responsible for equipment required for competitions.
Entry Requirements
There are no minimum education requirements for this course although it is expected that the student be employed or actively engaged in their chosen sport.

Program Duration
Full Time:  9 months       Part Time: 18 months
  • Classes are normally timetabled between 9.00am and 4.00pm, Monday to Thursday
  • Industry placement occurs in the 3rd semester and students are placed in the work place once a week in addition to normal classes
  • Hands-on components occur throughout the course.
N.B. Face to face and correspondence courses can be tailored to an individual or group’s specific needs and requirements. Course Commencement
Course commences in February, April, July and September each year for full time and part time applicants.

Program Articulation
Successful completion of this program may assist students to gain entry into university and/or may contribute towards study credits.

Delivery Methods
This course is delivered through face to face classroom learning, online learning at students' self pace or by correspondence and can also be offered as a traineeship.

Assessment Methods
Students are required to participate in practical activities, complete assignments, presentations, vocational projects, observation, role plays and recognition of prior learning (RPL). Assessment opportunities will be endorsed as a cluster where applicable.  If a suitable strategic goal is not identified then a recognised resource will be implemented.

Recognition of Prior Learning
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is a process where a student may be granted credit or partial credit towards a qualification in recognition of skills and knowledge gained through work experience, life experience and/or formal training.

Accreditation
Qualifications granted by ASA are accredited by the Queensland Government through the Department of Education, Training and the Arts. This program is nationally recognised under the Australian Quality Training Framework (AQTF). ASA National Training Provider No. 31717

Course Structure

The course structure of the Certificate II in Sport (Officiating) comprises a minimum of twenty three (23) units of competency from the national qualification. The 23 units are made up of:
  • five (5) core/compulsory units
  • six (6) stream units from the functional area of officiating
  • four (4) specialisation units (Football - soccer  is chosen)
  • eight (8) elective units
The approved nominal reporting hours of delivery for Certificate II in Sport (Officiating) is 285 Hours.
